Giant Ovary Tumor Weighting 23.7 kgs removed at KIMS hospital.
A large 23.7 kgs ovarian tumor was removed from a 42 yrs old woman after a 3 hrs long surgery by doctors at KIMS hospital, Secunderabad. The woman was investigated 2 years back by the local doctor for persistent pain abdomen and found that there was a large ovarian weighing mass and that she must undergo surgery and there is a life risk involved in the surgery. The patient fearing the risk postponed the procedure. Over the 2 yrs. the tumor grew further in size. She developed various problems to an extent that she was unable to eat even a handful of rice or even drink a full glass of water. Despite this, she kept postponing the surgery due to fear even after the family repeated counselling. Few weeks back she developed breathing difficulties and both her legs were swollen. The doctors said that the blood circulation to the lower body was getting obstructed due to the tumor compression of blood vessels. It was when the patient was unable to sleep in a lying down position and had to sleep in a sitting posture, she realized that she had no option but to undergo the surgery. Due to the enormous size of the tumor the local doctor referred the patient to a higher centre. The oncosurgery team at KIMS hospitals headed by Dr Nagendra Parvataneni successfully removed the tumor. He said that the operation lasted for about 3 hrs. and removing such a large mass was very challenging taking care of the patient’s vitals after removal is important cause there is such a large volume loss and hemodynamically the patient could become unstable. He said that the removed tumor was weighing 23.7 kgs and was about 65 cm in diameter. Handling such a heavy tumor of that length was difficult during the surgery. He also added that large tumors of the ovary are quite common but do not reach this enormous extent as in this case because of the availability of good imaging modalities everywhere. These large tumors can be cancerous or noncancerous.
